Position Summary

Onyx is seeking a Data Scientist to support the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s (FBI) Criminal Investigative Division, Hi-Tech Organized Crime Unit (HTOCU). This role directly supports the Joint Criminal Opioid and Darknet Enforcement (JCODE) and Mobile Encrypted Networks and Communications Exploitation (MENACE) teams. The candidate will assist in managing, enriching, and visualizing large datasets to uncover investigative leads and close intelligence gaps.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct data exploitation, statistical analysis, and visualization to support federal investigative operations.
  • Retrieve, structure, condition, and manage large volumes of complex data from diverse sources.
  • Develop and deploy data pipelines and tools to enable data-driven decision-making.
  • Identify anomalies, patterns, and intelligence gaps through rigorous exploratory data analysis.
  • Create dashboards and visual products using tools such as Power BI or Tableau to communicate findings.
  • Provide technical guidance on data architecture, ETL workflows, and advanced analytical methodologies.
  • Translate complex data insights into actionable intelligence for law enforcement and prosecutorial teams.
  • Brief findings to management, stakeholders, and investigators in a clear and concise manner.
  • Recommend and implement improvements to data handling and analysis workflows within secure environments.
  • Work with little to no supervision in a high-stakes, classified setting.

Required Qualifications

  • Security Clearance: Active Top-Secret clearance with Counterintelligence Polygraph.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in data science, computer science, statistics, mathematics, or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 5 years in data science, analytics, or related quantitative field.
  • Proficiency with scripting languages such as Python or R for statistical modeling and visualization.
  • Experience in data wrangling, normalization, de-duplication, and data conditioning.
  • Familiarity with relational and non-relational databases, data warehousing, and data exploration techniques.
  • Experience with cloud services (e.g., AWS), especially data hosting, visualization, or orchestration.
  • Ability to synthesize data into actionable insights and communicate to non-technical stakeholders.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting federal law enforcement or intelligence community missions, particularly with criminal or darknet investigations.
  • Familiarity with systems and platforms relevant to the FBI environment, including Amazon Web Services (AWS) or equivalent cloud environments for hosting and managing data analytics workflows.
  • Containerization and orchestration frameworks, such as Docker and Kubernetes, for scalable deployment of analytical tools.
  • Git or similar code versioning tools for collaborative development and tracking.
  • Data visualization tools like Power BI or Tableau for building actionable dashboards.
  • Working knowledge of data governance, legal, and compliance frameworks relevant to federal investigations.
  • Certifications such as:  CompTIA Security+​, CompTIA Network+, ​AWS Cloud Practitioner or equivalent
  • Experience working in Agile development teams and direct investigative support roles.
